Yes, cleaning or replacing a showerhead is a safe, easy job. Taking apart the shower mixing valve is more involved: shut off the water first, and call a plumber if you cannot isolate it or the valve is damaged.
A shower that dribbles instead of sprays is usually not a plumbing failure. In most homes, the problem is limescale and sediment blocking the tiny nozzles in the showerhead. Hard water leaves mineral deposits every time the shower dries out, and over months those deposits choke the flow and send jets spraying in every direction.
Before taking anything apart, compare the shower with the bathroom tap/faucet and other fixtures. If the sink runs strongly but the shower is weak, the cause is in the showerhead, the hose (on handheld showers), or the shower's mixing valve. If the whole house is weak, the problem is further upstream and cleaning the showerhead will not help much.

Common causes
Limescale in the showerhead
Most commonMinerals in hard water build up in the nozzles and the inlet screen. This is by far the most common cause of weak shower pressure and is easily fixed by descaling with white vinegar.
Clogged inlet screen or flow restrictor
Most commonMost showerheads have a small mesh screen and a plastic flow restrictor where they screw onto the arm. Grit and scale lodge there, especially after mains work. Cleaning it usually restores normal flow.
Kinked or collapsed shower hose
SometimesFlexible hoses on handheld showers can kink, twist or collapse internally with age, restricting flow. Replacing the hose is simple.
Worn or blocked mixing valve cartridge
SometimesThe shower valve behind the handle blends hot and cold water. Debris or scale in the cartridge, or a stuck anti-scald (pressure-balance or thermostatic) mechanism, can restrict flow, especially on one side.
Low supply pressure
SometimesShowers fed from a rooftop or loft tank by gravity (common in many homes in India and older UK homes) have low pressure by design, particularly on upper floors. Whole-house problems such as a failing pressure-reducing valve or pump also affect showers. These need a plumber.
Safety first: before you start
- Critical:Before opening the shower valve, shut off the water to it (the shower's own isolation valves if present, otherwise the main valve) and open the shower to relieve pressure.
- Critical:If you have an electric shower (a unit on the wall that heats the water), switch it off at its pull cord or isolator and at the breaker or fuse box before touching anything. Do not open the unit; internal repairs are for an electrician.
- Put a towel or non-slip mat in the tub or shower tray before standing or kneeling in it.
- Never mix vinegar or descaler with bleach or other cleaning products. Rinse the showerhead well before using any other cleaner.
- Keep the bathroom ventilated when using descaling products, and wear gloves and eye protection with commercial descalers.
- Do not disable or remove anti-scald parts in the mixing valve. They prevent dangerous hot water surges.

Step-by-step fix

Narrow down the problem
Run the bathroom sink and compare. If the sink is also weak, check other rooms. If it is only the shower, remove the showerhead (next step) and run the shower without it. A strong flow from the bare arm or hose points to the showerhead. A weak flow points to the hose, valve or supply.

Remove the showerhead
Unscrew the showerhead from the shower arm or hose by hand, turning it counter-clockwise as you face it. If it is tight, wrap the nut in a cloth and use a wrench, supporting the shower arm with your other hand so you do not twist it loose inside the wall.
Warning: If the shower arm turns or wobbles in the wall, stop. Twisting it can break the fitting behind the wall and cause a hidden leak.

Clean the inlet screen and flow restrictor
Look inside the inlet of the showerhead. Pry out the small washer and mesh screen with a flathead screwdriver and rinse them. Behind it you may see a coloured plastic flow restrictor. Clean it in place with a toothbrush, but leave it installed.
Tip: Many regions set a maximum shower flow rate, and restrictors are how showerheads meet it. Removing one may be against local rules and increases hot water use. Clean it, do not remove it.

Descale the showerhead
Soak the showerhead in a bowl of white vinegar for one to two hours, or overnight for heavy scale. For a fixed head you cannot remove, fill a plastic bag with vinegar, pull it over the head so the nozzles are submerged, and fasten it with a rubber band. Afterwards, scrub the face with a toothbrush and clear stubborn nozzles with a toothpick. Many heads have soft rubber nozzles you can rub with your thumb to break off scale.
Warning: Vinegar can dull some coated, brass or nickel finishes. Check the maker's care instructions, or soak only the face of the head.

Flush and refit
Run the shower for 30 seconds without the head to flush grit from the pipe. Wrap the arm threads with two or three turns of PTFE tape clockwise (as you face the threads), refit the washer and screen, and screw the head back on hand-tight plus a small turn with a cloth-wrapped wrench.

Check or replace the hose
For a handheld shower, check the hose for kinks, crushing or bulges. Unscrew it from both ends and run water through it into the tub. If the flow is poor through the hose alone, replace it. Make sure the new hose's rubber washers are in place at both ends.

Inspect the mixing valve cartridge
If the flow is weak even from the bare pipe, the cartridge may be blocked. Shut off the water supply to the shower and open the handle to relieve pressure. Remove the handle and trim plate, then the retaining clip or nut, and pull the cartridge. Rinse debris from it and the valve body, or fit a new cartridge that exactly matches your valve brand and model.
Warning: If you cannot shut off the water to the shower, do not remove the cartridge. Water will come out at full mains pressure. Call a plumber.

Test the shower
Turn the water back on slowly, then run the shower on full hot, full cold and in between. Check for drips at the showerhead connection and from the trim plate. Confirm the temperature is steady and does not surge.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my shower pressure low but the sink is fine?
Because the problem is in the shower itself: usually a scaled-up showerhead, a clogged inlet screen, a kinked hose or a blocked mixing valve. Remove the showerhead and run the shower without it to find out which.
Is it legal to remove the flow restrictor from my showerhead?
In many places, showerheads must meet maximum flow limits, and the restrictor is how they do it. Removing it may break local rules and uses more hot water. Clean the restrictor instead, or buy a compliant showerhead designed for low-pressure systems.
How long should I soak a showerhead in vinegar?
One to two hours is enough for light scale. Heavy build-up may need an overnight soak. Check the manufacturer's instructions, as long soaks can damage some finishes.
Will a new showerhead increase water pressure?
It cannot raise the pressure in your pipes, but a head designed for low-pressure systems can make the spray feel stronger. If your supply pressure is genuinely low, a plumber can advise on a pump or pressure fixes.
Why does my shower pressure drop when someone uses another tap?
Some drop is normal because the water is shared. A big drop, or a sudden temperature change, can mean undersized pipes, low supply pressure or a pressure-balance valve that needs servicing.
