Yes. Cleaning the lint screen, duct and outside vent is a safe DIY job with the dryer unplugged, and it’s one of the most important fire-safety tasks in the home. Call a pro only if the vent is out of reach or the dryer itself is faulty.
If your dryer needs two or three cycles to dry a normal load, the problem is almost always airflow. A dryer works by blowing warm air through wet clothes and pushing the moist air outside. When lint clogs the screen, the duct or the vent hood, the moist air has nowhere to go, and the clothes just tumble in warm, humid air.
This isn’t only a waste of time and energy. Lint is highly flammable, and a dryer running hot with a restricted vent is a well-known cause of house fires. Cleaning the full vent path is one of the most valuable safety jobs you can do, and it usually takes under an hour.
This guide focuses on vented dryers, which push air outside through a duct. If you have a condenser or heat-pump dryer (common in apartments and in many countries), there’s no outside vent; instead you clean the lint filters, the condenser unit and empty the water tank. Those steps are covered too.

Signs of the problem
- Normal loads need more than one cycle to dry

Common causes
Lint buildup in the duct and vent hood
Most commonThe lint screen only catches part of the lint. The rest builds up inside the duct, at bends, and in the outside vent hood, gradually choking the airflow. This is the most common cause of slow drying and the biggest fire risk.
Dirty or coated lint screen
Most commonA screen full of lint blocks airflow right at the start. Even a screen that looks clean can be coated in an invisible film from dryer sheets or fabric softener, which stops air passing through.
Crushed or overly long ducting
Most commonFlexible foil or plastic duct crushes easily when the dryer is pushed back against the wall. Long runs with many bends also slow the air and trap lint. Plastic and thin foil ducts are a fire hazard and shouldn’t be used.
Overloading or very wet loads
SometimesAn overstuffed drum stops air circulating. Clothes that come out of the washer dripping, because of a weak spin or a drain problem, also take much longer to dry.
Dirty moisture sensor or condenser
SometimesMany dryers use metal sensor bars inside the drum to detect dampness. A coating of residue can make the dryer stop early. In condenser and heat-pump dryers, a lint-clogged condenser or heat exchanger has the same effect as a blocked vent.
Safety first: before you start

- Only work on outside vents you can reach safely from the ground or a stable, properly footed ladder. Don’t climb onto roofs.

Step-by-step fix

Clean and wash the lint screen
Pull out the screen and remove all visible lint. Then run water over it. If water beads up and sits on top, there’s a film blocking the mesh. Scrub both sides gently with warm soapy water and a soft brush, rinse, and let it dry completely before refitting.

Vacuum the lint screen housing
With the dryer unplugged, use a narrow vacuum nozzle or a lint brush to clean the slot the screen sits in. Lint collects just below it and is often missed.
Warning: Don’t push lint further down into the dryer. Vacuum it out rather than poking it in.

Pull out the dryer and disconnect the duct
With a helper, slide the dryer forward far enough to reach the back. Loosen the clamp and pull the duct off the dryer’s exhaust outlet. Vacuum the outlet itself, since lint often packs in there.
Warning: On gas dryers, watch the gas line as you move the machine and don’t let it bend sharply or pull on its connection.

Clean the full length of the duct
Feed a vent brush into the duct and work it back and forth, adding rods as you go, then vacuum out the loosened lint. If the duct is short, you can remove it entirely and clean it outdoors. Look closely at bends, which trap the most lint.

Clean the outside vent hood
Go outside and find where the duct exits the wall. Remove lint from the hood and flap by hand or with the brush, and check for nests, leaves or damaged flaps. The flap should open easily and close by itself. If there’s a mesh screen over the vent, remove lint from it; fine screens clog quickly and some building rules don’t allow them on dryer vents.

Replace crushed, plastic or foil ducting
If the duct is white vinyl, thin foil, or crushed in places, replace it. Rigid metal duct is best for long or hidden runs; semi-rigid metal duct is a good choice for the short connection behind the dryer. Keep the run as short and straight as possible, connect sections with metal clamps and foil tape, and never use screws that poke into the duct, since they catch lint.

Clean the moisture sensor bars
Look inside the drum near the lint screen for two curved metal strips. Wipe them with a soft cloth and a little rubbing alcohol to remove residue. Clean sensors let the dryer judge dryness correctly on automatic cycles.

Condenser and heat-pump dryers: clean the condenser
If your dryer has no outside vent, empty the water tank after every load and clean all lint filters (many have two). Remove the condenser unit or heat-exchanger filter as described in your manual and rinse it under running water until clear. Let it drip dry before refitting.

Reconnect and test airflow
Refit the duct with the clamp, push the dryer back leaving a gap so the duct isn’t crushed, and restore power. Run the dryer on a heat cycle and go outside: you should feel a strong flow of warm air and see the flap fully open. Then dry a normal load and time it.
