They are very common in newer homes during the first couple of years and in homes with big seasonal swings in humidity.
The reason is usually the wooden framing behind the drywall. As timber dries and shrinks, or expands and contracts with the seasons, it moves slightly relative to the nail, and the drywall no longer sits tight against the stud. Simply hammering the nail back in rarely works for long. The reliable fix is to drive a drywall screw just beside the pop to pull the board back against the framing, then set the old nail and patch over both.

Step-by-step fix

Find all the pops and check the area
Shine a light across the wall or ceiling at a low angle to reveal every bump; they’re often in a line along a stud or joist. Mark each one lightly with a pencil. Scan the area with a stud and wire detector to confirm the framing position and check for cables or pipes.

Press the drywall tight to the framing
Push the drywall firmly against the stud next to the pop with your hand. If it moves in, the board has pulled away and needs to be re-secured.

Drive a screw beside the nail
While pressing the drywall in, drive a drywall screw into the stud about 4-5 cm (1.5-2 in) above or below the popped nail. Set the screw head just below the surface, in a shallow dimple, without tearing the paper face. A dimpler bit stops at the right depth automatically.
Warning: If the screw meets unexpected resistance or the detector showed anything near the spot, stop. Don’t drive screws within the path of cables above or below outlets and switches.

Deal with the old nail
Tap the popped nail below the surface with a hammer and nail set, creating a small dimple. If the nail is very loose, pull it out instead and rely on the new screw. Scrape off any loose compound and paint flakes around it.

Fill the dimples
Apply spackle or joint compound over the screw and nail dimples with a putty knife, scraping flush. Let it dry, then apply a second thin coat slightly wider than the first to hide any shrinkage.

When fully dry, sand lightly with a fine sanding sponge until the patch is flush with the wall. Check with a raking light and touch up any dips.
