A noisy fan often works poorly too, and that leaves steam in the room, which leads to mold and peeling paint.
Most repairs are straightforward: clean the grille, fan wheel and housing, tighten loose mounting screws, and check the damper flap in the outlet. If the motor is worn out, many fans let you unplug the motor from a built-in socket and swap it for a matching replacement.
Because the fan is wired to mains power and mounted overhead, this is a caution job. Switch off the circuit at the breaker, not just at the wall switch, use a stable ladder, and know when a job has moved from cleaning into electrical work.

Step-by-step fix

Turn off power at the breaker
Find the breaker or fuse that supplies the bathroom fan and switch it off. Turn the fan switch on to confirm it doesn’t run. If the breaker isn’t labelled, switch off the main or ask an electrician to help identify it.
Warning: Wall switches can be wired to break only one conductor, and the fan may share a circuit with a light or heater. The breaker is the only safe cut-off.

Remove and clean the grille
Pull the grille down gently. It’s usually held by two wire springs that you squeeze together to release. Wash it in warm soapy water, rinse, and let it dry.

Clean the fan wheel and housing
Vacuum the dust from the housing and fan wheel with a brush attachment. Use a soft brush or toothbrush to loosen stubborn dust from the blades, then vacuum again. A clean, balanced wheel alone often fixes rattling and humming.

Tighten everything
Check the screws that hold the motor plate to the housing and the housing to the ceiling joist. Tighten any that are loose. Spin the fan wheel by hand: it should turn freely without scraping. If the wheel wobbles on the shaft, tighten its set screw or clip if it has one.

Check the damper
Look at the flap where the fan connects to the duct. It should open freely when pushed and close under gravity. Clean away dust or lint that makes it stick. If the rattling happens on windy days, the outside vent flap may be the source.

Lubricate the motor only if allowed
Some older motors have oil ports or say they can be oiled. If yours does, add one or two drops of light machine oil to the bearing, not the housing. Most modern motors are sealed and can’t be lubricated. Don’t spray general-purpose penetrating products into the motor.

Replace a worn motor
If the fan still grinds or hums after cleaning, the motor is likely failing. Find the model number on the label inside the housing and order the matching replacement motor. Many fans have a plug-in connector: unplug the motor, remove its mounting screws, fit the new one, and plug it in.
Warning: If the motor is hard-wired rather than plugged in, or if the housing needs replacing, that is electrical work. Hire an electrician unless you are competent and permitted to do wiring where you live.

Check the duct if you can reach it
From the attic or ceiling space, check the duct is attached to the fan and the outside vent, and isn’t crushed, kinked or sagging with water. Seal loose joints with foil duct tape. Walk only on joists or boards.

Reassemble and test
Refit the grille, switch the breaker back on, and run the fan. Hold a sheet of toilet paper near the grille: it should be drawn firmly against it.

Why is my bathroom fan so loud?

Is it enough to turn off the fan at the wall switch?

Can I oil a bathroom fan motor?
