Checking settings, cleaning filters and thawing a frozen coil are safe DIY steps. Cleaning the outdoor unit is fine only with power off at the disconnect. Refrigerant, capacitors, compressors and wiring are for a licensed technician.

When the AC runs but the room won’t cool, the cause is often something simple: the wrong mode on the remote or thermostat, a filter clogged with dust, a tripped breaker for the outdoor unit, or a coil that has frozen into a block of ice. These are all things you can check safely in under an hour.

This guide covers both central (ducted) systems common in North America and ductless split ACs common in India, Asia and elsewhere. Both work the same way: an indoor coil absorbs heat from the room, refrigerant carries it outside, and the outdoor unit (condenser) releases it. Anything that blocks airflow at either end, or stops the outdoor unit running, cuts cooling.

Some faults are not DIY. Low refrigerant means there’s a leak, and handling refrigerant requires certification in many countries. Capacitors can hold a dangerous electrical charge even with the power off, and compressor or wiring faults need a technician. We’ll tell you exactly where to stop.

Signs of the problem

  • The indoor unit or vents blow air, but it isn’t cold

Common causes

Wrong settings or thermostat issue

Most common

The mode may be set to fan, dry or heat instead of cool, the set temperature may be higher than the room, or a schedule may be overriding you. On central systems, a thermostat with dead batteries can stop calling for cooling.

Dirty air filter

Most common

A clogged filter starves the indoor coil of airflow, so the system can’t absorb heat and may freeze. Split AC mesh filters can clog within a few weeks in dusty conditions. This is the single most common cause of poor cooling.

Frozen evaporator coil

Sometimes

Restricted airflow, a slow fan, or low refrigerant make the indoor coil drop below freezing and ice over. Ice blocks airflow completely, so cooling gets worse and worse. It must be thawed before the AC can cool again.

Outdoor unit problem

Sometimes

A tripped breaker or pulled disconnect, a condenser coil choked with dust, leaves or cottonwood, or blocked airflow around the unit prevents heat from being released. A failed capacitor or fan motor will also stop the outdoor unit, and that needs a technician.

Clogged condensate drain

Sometimes

The water removed from the air must drain away. A clogged line can overflow, and many systems have a float switch that shuts off cooling when water backs up.

Refrigerant leak

Sometimes

AC refrigerant is a sealed system and doesn’t get used up. If it’s low, there’s a leak, often shown by ice on the pipes, hissing, or oily residue at joints. Finding the leak, repairing it and recharging must be done by a certified technician.

Safety first: before you start

  • Critical:Before touching the outdoor unit, switch it off at the thermostat, then turn off its outdoor disconnect switch or pull the disconnect block, and switch off its breaker. Wait a few minutes.
  • Critical:Never open the electrical panel of the outdoor unit or touch the capacitor. Capacitors can store a dangerous charge even after power is off.
  • Don’t handle refrigerant, loosen refrigerant fittings, or use DIY recharge cans. Refrigerant can cause frostbite and is regulated in many countries.
  • Turn the indoor unit off at the remote and at its power point or breaker before removing covers or filters.
  • Use a stable ladder for high-mounted split units, and have someone hold it. Don’t stand on chairs.
  • Never use a pressure washer on AC coils. It flattens the fins and can force water into electrical parts.

Step-by-step fix

    Check the settings

    Set the mode to Cool (not Fan, Dry, Auto or Heat) and the temperature a few degrees below the current room temperature. On central systems, check the thermostat has power and the fan is on Auto. Replace thermostat batteries if the display is blank or weak. On a split AC, replace the remote’s batteries and look for timer or eco settings.

    Check power to both units

    Look at the breaker panel for tripped breakers for the AC, air handler or furnace. Reset a tripped breaker once. Check the outdoor disconnect (a box on the wall near the condenser) is on, and on split ACs check any wall switch or stabiliser feeding the unit.

    Warning: If a breaker trips again right after reset, stop. That points to an electrical fault that needs a technician.

    Clean or replace the filter

    For central systems, find the filter at the air handler or a return-air grille, and replace it if it’s grey or clogged. For split ACs, switch off the unit, lift the front panel, slide out the mesh filters, wash them with lukewarm water and a little mild detergent, and let them dry fully in the shade before refitting.

    Tip: In dusty cities, split AC filters may need cleaning every 2 weeks during heavy use.

    Look for ice and thaw a frozen coil

    Check the indoor coil (behind the filter on split units, or inside the air handler) and the larger copper pipe for frost or ice. If you see ice, switch the system to Fan only or turn it off completely and let it thaw, which can take several hours. Put towels down for meltwater. Don’t chip at the ice.

    Warning: If the coil freezes again after thawing with a clean filter, low refrigerant or a fan fault is likely. Call a technician.

    Inspect the outdoor unit

    With the system running, go outside and see whether the fan is spinning and you can hear the compressor humming. Clear leaves, plants, boxes and debris to leave at least about 60 cm (2 ft) of open space around the unit. If the fan doesn’t spin or the unit hums without starting, turn the system off and call a pro, since a failed capacitor or motor is likely.

    Clean the outdoor condenser coil

    Turn off the system at the thermostat, then turn off the outdoor disconnect and the breaker. Brush loose debris off the fins gently with a soft brush. Spray the coil with a gentle garden hose from the inside out if you can, or from the outside straight on, never at an angle that bends the fins. Let it dry before restoring power.

    Warning: No pressure washers and no stiff brushes. Don’t remove the top fan assembly or open the electrical compartment.

    Clear the condensate drain

    Find the drain line (a PVC pipe from the air handler or a small hose from a split unit). If the drain pan is full or water is leaking indoors, use a wet/dry vacuum on the outdoor end of the line to pull out the clog. Many central systems have a cap on the line near the unit where you can pour a cup of warm water to check it flows.

    Restore power and test

    Turn the breaker and disconnect back on, wait about 5 minutes (many units have a built-in restart delay), then set Cool. After 15 minutes, the air from the vents or split unit should feel clearly colder than the room.
