You can safely find and fix an overloaded circuit yourself by unplugging and moving appliances. If the breaker trips instantly, feels hot, buzzes or smells of burning, stop and call a licensed electrician.
A circuit breaker is a safety switch. When it trips, it is doing its job: cutting power because it sensed too much current, a short circuit or current leaking to ground. A breaker that trips once after you ran a heater and a kettle together is normal. A breaker that keeps tripping is telling you something about the circuit or an appliance on it, and the fix is almost never to make the breaker stop protecting you.
There are three usual culprits. An overload means too many devices are drawing power on one circuit at the same time. A short circuit means a live (hot) conductor is touching neutral or another live conductor, usually in a damaged cord, appliance or wiring. A ground fault means current is escaping to earth, often through water or damaged insulation. Overloads are something you can solve yourself. Shorts and ground faults inside walls are jobs for an electrician.
Household electricity is dangerous whether you are on 120 V (North America) or 230 V (India, the UK, Europe and much of the world). This guide keeps you on the safe side of the panel door: you will reset breakers and move appliances, but you will not open the breaker or fuse box, replace breakers or touch wiring.

Signs of the problem
- One breaker switch sits in the middle or OFF position and part of the house has no power

Common causes
Circuit overload
Most commonEvery circuit has a rated capacity. High-wattage appliances such as space heaters, kettles, irons, microwaves, hair dryers and window AC units can each use a large share of it. Running two or three together on the same circuit makes the breaker trip after a few seconds or minutes. This is the most common cause and the easiest to fix.
Faulty appliance or cord
Most commonA damaged cord, a failing motor or a heating element that has shorted inside an appliance can trip the breaker as soon as that appliance is plugged in or switched on. If the trip always follows one device, the device is the problem, not the circuit.
Short circuit in wiring
SometimesWhen a live conductor touches neutral or another live conductor, current spikes and the breaker trips instantly. Causes include loose connections in outlets or switches, nails driven into cables, rodent damage and worn insulation. Wiring faults inside walls must be traced by an electrician.
Ground fault or earth leakage
SometimesCurrent leaking to ground, often through moisture in an outdoor outlet, a bathroom, a damp basement or a wet appliance, trips GFCI, RCD or RCBO devices and sometimes standard breakers. Trips that happen during rain are a strong clue.
Worn or failing breaker
Less commonBreakers can weaken with age and heat and start tripping below their rating. A breaker that feels warm, buzzes or looks discolored may be failing or have a loose connection at the panel. Replacing breakers is panel work and must be done by a licensed electrician.
Safety first: before you start
- Critical:Work with dry hands, stand on a dry floor and wear rubber-soled shoes when you touch the breaker or fuse box.
- Critical:Only operate the breaker switches. Never remove the panel cover, touch the bus bars or wiring, or replace a breaker yourself.
- Critical:Never tape, wedge or hold a breaker in the ON position, and never swap in a larger breaker or fuse to stop trips. That removes the protection and can start a fire.
- Critical:If you smell burning, see scorch marks or hear buzzing or crackling from the panel, do not touch it. Leave it off and call an electrician.
- Keep a flashlight handy, since the area around the panel may be dark when power is off.

Step-by-step fix

Find the tripped breaker
Open the door of the breaker panel, fuse box or consumer unit (the door only, not the inner cover). A tripped breaker usually rests in the middle position or fully OFF, sometimes with a colored flag in a small window. On an RCD or RCBO, the test-style switch will be down. Check the labels to see which rooms or appliances it feeds.
Tip: If the labels are missing or vague, now is a good time to note which rooms lost power so you can label the breaker later.

Switch off or unplug everything on that circuit
Before resetting, turn off lights and unplug appliances in the rooms that lost power, especially heaters, kettles, irons, microwaves and anything with a motor. Resetting into a full load often trips the breaker again straight away and puts stress on it.

Reset the breaker correctly
Push the breaker handle firmly all the way to OFF first. You should feel it click. Then push it firmly to ON. Many breakers will not reset if you push from the middle position straight to ON. Keep your face turned slightly away and your hand dry. For a fuse box, a blown fuse must be replaced with one of the exact same rating, never a higher one, and never with wire or foil.
Warning: If the breaker trips again instantly with everything unplugged, stop. That points to a short or ground fault in the wiring. Leave it off and call an electrician.

Plug things back in one at a time
Reconnect devices one by one, switching each on and waiting a minute before adding the next. If the breaker trips as soon as one particular appliance goes on, that appliance (or its cord) is the likely fault. If it trips only when several are running together, the circuit is overloaded.

Inspect the suspect appliance
Unplug the suspect appliance and look at its cord and plug for cuts, crushed sections, melted plastic or scorch marks. Try it on a different circuit, ideally one with nothing else running. If it trips that breaker too, stop using it and have it repaired or replaced.
Warning: Do not open an appliance to look for the fault while it is plugged in. Many appliances hold dangerous voltage internally even when switched off.

Spread out high-wattage loads
If the problem is overload, move heavy appliances to outlets on different circuits. Common fixes are running the space heater in another room’s outlet, not using the kettle and microwave at the same time, and giving the AC, washing machine or oven its own circuit. Test which outlets share a circuit by switching off one breaker and seeing what goes dead.
Tip: Extension cords and power strips do not add capacity. They only add more outlets to the same circuit.

Check for moisture
If the trips happen during or after rain, look at outdoor outlets, garden lights, garage outlets and anything in a damp basement. Unplug items in wet areas. Do not touch wet outlets or fixtures with the power on. Let the area dry and have damaged outdoor fittings replaced with weather-resistant ones.

Label the circuit and monitor it
Once the breaker holds, label it clearly and keep a note of what was running when it tripped. If it trips again under a normal, light load, or you notice warmth or smell at an outlet or the panel, book an electrician and share your notes. They speed up the diagnosis.

How to prevent it
- Do not run several high-wattage appliances on the same circuit at once.
- Never plug a space heater or AC unit into a power strip or daisy-chained extension cords.
- Replace appliances with damaged cords or plugs instead of taping them up.
- Label your breaker panel so you know which circuit feeds which room.
- Have an electrician inspect the panel if your home is old or you are adding big appliances.
Frequently asked questions
Is it dangerous if my breaker keeps tripping?
The trip itself is the breaker keeping you safe. The danger is in ignoring the cause or defeating the breaker. An overload you fix by moving appliances is low risk. Instant trips, heat, buzzing or burning smells point to faults that can start fires and need an electrician.
Can I just replace the breaker with a bigger one?
No. The breaker is sized to protect the wire in your walls. A larger breaker lets the wire overheat before anything trips, which is a classic cause of house fires. Breaker replacement is panel work and must be done by a licensed electrician in almost every country.
Why does my breaker trip when I turn on the microwave or heater?
These appliances draw a lot of current. If other loads are already running on the same circuit, switching on one more pushes it over the limit. Try the appliance on its own. If it runs fine alone, spread your loads. If it trips even alone, the appliance may be faulty.
What is the difference between a breaker, an RCD and an RCBO?
A standard breaker (called an MCB in many countries) trips on overload and short circuit. An RCD or RCCB (similar to a GFCI in North America) trips when current leaks to ground. An RCBO does both in one device. Different devices tripping point to different causes.
How many times can I reset a tripped breaker?
Reset it once after removing the load. If it trips again under a normal load, stop resetting. Repeated resets into a fault stress the breaker and the wiring. Find the cause first, and if you cannot, leave it off and call an electrician.
