Finding the cause (a wet outlet, a faulty appliance, a tripped breaker) is safe to do yourself. Replacing a GFCI outlet is only for confident DIYers with the power off and verified; RCDs in the consumer unit are electrician work.
A GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) outlet is the one with TEST and RESET buttons, usually found in bathrooms, kitchens, garages and outdoors in North America. In India, the UK and Europe, the same job is done by an RCD or RCCB (residual current device) in the consumer unit, or by an RCBO that combines it with a breaker. All of them cut power in a fraction of a second when they detect current leaking to ground, which is exactly what happens when electricity passes through a person.
When a GFCI or RCD won’t reset, there are only a few possibilities. It has no power reaching it (so the reset cannot latch), it is still detecting a leak (from moisture or a faulty appliance), or the device itself has failed. Most of these you can check without tools.
These devices are life-saving, so the goal is to find the cause, never to bypass them. Voltage in homes is 120 V in North America and 230 V in India, the UK and the EU, and both can kill. Only replace a GFCI outlet if you are comfortable with basic wiring, and leave anything inside the breaker panel or consumer unit to an electrician.

Signs of the problem
- The RESET button on a GFCI outlet will not stay in, or clicks but pops straight back out
- The RESET button pushes in but nothing plugged into the outlet works
- Other outlets in the bathroom, kitchen, garage or outdoors are dead too
- The RCD or RCCB switch in the consumer unit flips back down as soon as you push it up
- The GFCI or RCD trips when a specific appliance is switched on, or whenever it rains
- The GFCI indicator light is off, red or flashing
Common causes
No power reaching the GFCI
Most commonMost GFCI outlets need power to reset. If the breaker feeding it has tripped, or another GFCI upstream on the same circuit has tripped, the reset button will not latch. Check the breaker panel and any other GFCI outlets nearby (garage, bathroom, outdoor, basement) before assuming the device is faulty.
Moisture in an outlet or fitting
Most commonWater from rain, a leaking pipe, condensation or cleaning can create a small leakage path to ground. Outdoor outlets, garden lights, bathroom fittings and damp basements are frequent sources. The device trips again as soon as you reset it until the moisture dries out.
Faulty appliance on the circuit
Most commonAppliances with heating elements or motors (kettles, water heaters, washing machines, pumps, hair dryers, fridges) can develop small leaks to ground as they age. The GFCI or RCD sees this and trips. If unplugging one appliance lets it reset, that appliance is the problem.
Worn-out GFCI device
SometimesGFCI outlets contain electronics that wear out, particularly after many trips or power surges. Newer models are designed to refuse to reset once their self-test fails, so a device that has power but will not reset may simply have reached end of life.
Wiring fault or reversed line and load
SometimesIf a GFCI was recently installed and has never worked, the incoming (line) and outgoing (load) wires may be connected to the wrong terminals. Damaged cables or loose neutrals elsewhere on the circuit can also cause trips. These need a careful check by someone who understands the circuit.
Safety first: before you start
- Critical:Before opening any outlet, switch off the circuit at the breaker or fuse box, not just at a wall switch or by pressing TEST.

Step-by-step fix

Unplug everything on the circuit
Unplug every appliance from the GFCI outlet and from the other outlets in the same room or area. For an RCD, unplug as much as you can in the part of the house that lost power. A leaking appliance is a very common reason the reset will not hold.

Check the breaker or fuse box
Look for a tripped breaker, which usually rests in the middle or OFF position. Push it firmly to OFF and then back to ON. A GFCI with no power cannot reset, and many people press the button for ages when the real cause is a tripped breaker.

Look for another tripped GFCI upstream
One GFCI often protects several ordinary outlets further along the circuit. It could be in the garage, a bathroom, the basement or outside. Press RESET firmly on every GFCI you can find. If one of them resets, it may be the one feeding the outlet you were trying.
Tip: Once you find the controlling GFCI, label the downstream outlets with a small “GFCI protected” sticker so you know next time.

Press RESET the right way
Press TEST first, then press RESET firmly until it clicks and stays in. On RCDs, push the switch fully down and then firmly up. If the reset holds, plug appliances back in one at a time, waiting a minute between each, to find any appliance that trips it.

Dry out wet locations
If trips follow rain, showers or cleaning, check outdoor outlets, weatherproof covers, garden lighting and bathroom fittings for water. Leave the circuit off and let things dry for a day, with a fan if it helps. Replace cracked covers with in-use (bubble) covers rated for wet locations.
Warning: Do not touch a wet outlet or fitting with the power on, and do not use a hair dryer on a live outlet.

Decide whether the GFCI outlet is faulty
If the breaker is on, no upstream device is tripped, nothing is plugged in, the area is dry, and the GFCI still will not reset (or the plug-in tester shows it has no power when it should), the device has likely failed. You can replace it like-for-like if you are confident. If you are unsure, stop here and call an electrician.

Switch off, lock out and verify dead
Switch off the breaker for that circuit, tape it and leave a note. Test your non-contact tester on a known live outlet so you know it works. Then remove the cover plate and the two mounting screws and gently pull the GFCI out. Hold the tester near every wire. It must stay silent.
Warning: If the tester beeps on any wire after the breaker is off, there is another source of power in the box. Stop and call an electrician.

Photograph and label the wiring
Take clear photos. The back of the GFCI has two pairs of terminals marked LINE and LOAD (the LOAD pair is often covered with a sticker when new). LINE wires bring power in and LOAD wires feed downstream outlets. In the US, hot is usually black or red and neutral white; in IEC countries, live is brown and neutral blue, with green or green-yellow for ground or earth. Colors vary in older homes, so label each wire with tape before removing it.
Warning: Mixing up LINE and LOAD is the most common GFCI installation mistake and can leave outlets unprotected. If you cannot tell which is which, call an electrician.

Fit the new GFCI like-for-like
Connect the new GFCI exactly as the old one: line hot to the LINE brass terminal, line neutral to the LINE silver terminal, load wires to the LOAD terminals, and ground to the green screw. Tighten screws firmly with wires wrapped clockwise or pushed fully into clamp holes. Fold the wires back neatly and screw the outlet into the box.

Restore power and test
Remove your tape and switch the breaker on. Press RESET, then TEST (it should click off), then RESET again. Use a plug-in tester on the GFCI and on the downstream outlets to confirm correct wiring and that its GFCI test button trips them.

Frequently asked questions
Why won’t my GFCI reset button stay in?
Usually because there is no power reaching it (a tripped breaker or upstream GFCI), because it still senses a fault from moisture or an appliance, or because the device has failed. Check power and unplug everything before concluding it is faulty.
Is an RCD the same as a GFCI?
They do the same job: detect current leaking to earth and cut power fast. GFCI is the North American term and is often built into an outlet. RCD or RCCB is the term used in India, the UK and Europe, and it usually sits in the consumer unit protecting many circuits.
Can I replace a GFCI outlet myself?
In many places a competent homeowner may, as long as the power is off and verified, the replacement is the same type and rating, and the LINE and LOAD wires go back exactly where they were. Some countries and local codes require a licensed electrician. If you are unsure, hire one.
Can I just replace the GFCI with a normal outlet?
No. GFCIs are required in wet and outdoor locations because they prevent fatal shocks. Swapping one for a standard outlet removes that protection for every outlet downstream and is against electrical codes.
Why does my GFCI trip when it rains?
Water is getting into an outdoor outlet, a light fitting, or a cable joint on that circuit and letting current leak to ground. Find the wet fitting, let it dry, and fit a proper weatherproof cover. If it keeps happening, an electrician should inspect the outdoor wiring.
How long does a GFCI outlet last?
Often around ten years, but it varies with surges, heat and how often it trips. Test it monthly. If TEST does not cut the power, or RESET will not hold with power present, replace it.
