There is one situation that can be normal. When you plug in or unplug a device that is switched on, you may see a single tiny, brief blue spark at the prongs. That happens because current starts or stops flowing as the contacts meet. If it is very small, happens only at the moment of plugging in, there is no smell, sound or marks, and the outlet works normally afterwards, it is usually not dangerous. Switching the device off before plugging or unplugging stops it. Anything more than that (large, yellow or white sparks, sparks while nothing is being plugged in, repeated sparks, smoke, smell, heat or marks) is not normal. If in doubt, treat it as the dangerous kind.

Stay safe

    Step back and assess from a distance

    Move away from the outlet and keep others, children and pets away. Look for flames, smoke and sparking that continues on its own. Your next action depends on what you see.

    After the breaker is off and the outlet and plug have cooled, unplug the appliance with dry hands by gripping the plug body, not the cord. If the plug is melted or stuck, leave it in place for the electrician.
