Tightening a loose outlet with spacers, or replacing a worn outlet like-for-like, is manageable DIY with the circuit off and verified dead. If you see heat damage, scorched wires or a broken box, call an electrician.
There are two kinds of “loose outlet” and they have different fixes. In the first, the whole outlet moves in the wall when you plug something in, often pushing back into the box. This usually happens because the outlet’s mounting ears don’t sit against the wall surface (the box is set too deep), or the mounting screws have loosened. In the second, the outlet is firmly fixed but plugs fall out because its internal contacts are worn.
Both problems matter more than they seem. An outlet that moves flexes the wires at their terminals every time you use it, which loosens connections. Plugs that sit loosely make poor contact. Both create heat and arcing, which is how many electrical fires start. The good news: outlet spacers, box extenders or a new outlet usually fix it for good.
Whether your home runs on 120 V (North America) or 230 V (India, the UK and the EU), the wires behind the outlet can seriously hurt you. Switch off the circuit at the breaker or fuse box, verify it is dead with a tester, and stop if you find any heat damage. Local codes in some places require a licensed electrician to replace outlets.

Most commonEvery time a plug goes in and out, the metal contacts inside the outlet spread a little. Eventually they no longer grip. The only fix is to replace the outlet.
Loose or broken box
SometimesOld-style boxes can come loose from the stud or drywall, or plastic boxes can crack. If the box itself moves, it needs securing or replacing, which is often a job for an electrician.

Step-by-step fix

Decide which problem you have
Plug something in and watch. If the whole outlet moves or pushes into the wall, the mounting needs fixing. If the outlet stays put but plugs slide out easily, the outlet’s contacts are worn and it needs replacing. Some outlets have both problems.

Switch off and lock out the circuit
Plug a lamp into the outlet and switch off breakers until it goes out. Tape the breaker OFF and leave a note. If you have a fuse box, remove the fuse and keep it with you.

Test your tester and verify dead
Hold your non-contact tester to a known live outlet to confirm it works. Remove the cover plate and hold the tester near every wire and terminal in the box. It must stay silent.
Warning: If any wire still reads live, there is another circuit in the box. Stop and call an electrician.

Inspect for heat damage
Remove the mounting screws and gently pull the outlet forward. Look for scorch marks, melted plastic, discolored wire insulation or loose wires. Photograph the connections from both sides.
Warning: If you see any heat damage, stop. Leave the circuit off and have an electrician check the outlet and wiring.

Fix a moving outlet with spacers
If the box is set too deep, place outlet spacers (small stackable plastic shims) or a box extender between the outlet’s mounting ears and the box so the ears sit flush with the wall surface. Use longer mounting screws if needed. Tighten until the outlet is firm but not bent.
Tip: A box extender also covers exposed edges of drywall or tile, which helps if the hole around the box is large.

Replace a worn outlet like-for-like
If plugs fall out, replace the outlet with the same type and rating (for example, same amperage, and GFCI for GFCI). Move one wire at a time from the old outlet to the same terminal on the new one: hot to brass (US black; IEC brown), neutral to silver (US white; IEC blue), and ground to green (bare, green or green-yellow). Wrap wires clockwise under the screws and tighten firmly.
Warning: Don’t reuse wire that is nicked, blackened or brittle. If there is not enough clean wire, or you find aluminum or cloth wiring, call an electrician.

Secure the outlet and cover
Fold the wires neatly into the box, mount the outlet so it is straight and snug, and fit the cover plate. Replace cracked plates, which leave live parts exposed.

Restore power and test
Remove the tape and switch the breaker on. Use a plug-in outlet tester to confirm correct wiring and grounding. Plug in a lamp and wiggle the plug gently to make sure it holds.

Is a loose outlet dangerous?
It can be. A moving outlet flexes its wire connections and a loose plug makes poor contact. Both can cause heat and arcing over time. Fix it soon, and stop using it if it feels warm or shows marks.
What are outlet spacers?
Small plastic shims that fit between the outlet’s mounting ears and the box. They fill the gap when the box sits too deep, so the outlet is held firmly against the wall.
