Most dead outlets are fixed without tools by resetting a breaker or GFCI or flipping a wall switch. Opening the outlet is only safe with the circuit switched off and verified dead, and any sign of burnt or loose wiring means calling an electrician.
An outlet (or socket, or power point) that suddenly stops working is frustrating, but the cause is usually simple. The circuit may be off at the breaker or fuse box, a GFCI or RCD may have tripped somewhere else, or the outlet may be controlled by a wall switch you forgot about. Checking these takes a few minutes and no tools.
If the easy checks do not bring it back, the problem is often a loose connection in that outlet or in the one before it on the circuit. Loose connections matter: they create heat and are a common cause of electrical fires. That is why this guide asks you to look for warning signs before and after you open anything.
Whether your home runs on 120 V (North America) or 230 V (India, the UK, the EU and elsewhere), the wires behind an outlet can give you a dangerous shock. Only remove an outlet from the wall after you have switched off the circuit and confirmed it is dead with a tester.

Signs of the problem
- Nothing works when plugged into one outlet, while others in the room are fine
- Several outlets in one room or area went dead together
- Only the top or bottom half of the outlet works
- The outlet works on and off, or only when the plug is wiggled
- The outlet cover is warm, discolored or smells of burnt plastic

Common causes
Tripped breaker or blown fuse
Most commonThe simplest explanation is that the circuit is off. A breaker may have tripped because of an overload, or a fuse may have blown. Breakers that are half-tripped can look almost normal, so check each one carefully.
Tripped GFCI or RCD elsewhere
Most commonA GFCI outlet in a bathroom, kitchen, garage or outside can protect ordinary outlets further down the circuit, sometimes in other rooms. In many countries an RCD in the consumer unit protects whole groups of circuits. If one of these trips, outlets that look completely normal go dead.
Switched outlet
Most commonIn many homes, one outlet (or just its top or bottom half) is controlled by a wall switch, often by the door, so a lamp can be switched on as you enter. In countries with switched sockets, the socket may have its own switch that is simply off.
Loose or failed connection
SometimesWires can work loose from terminal screws over time, and push-in (backstab) connections are particularly prone to this. A loose connection in one outlet can also cut power to every outlet after it on the circuit. Loose connections heat up, so they must be fixed, not ignored.
Worn-out receptacle
SometimesThe spring contacts inside an outlet lose their grip after years of use, so plugs fall out or make poor contact. A cracked or heat-damaged outlet should be replaced.
Safety first: before you start
- Critical:Before removing the cover plate, switch the circuit off at the breaker or fuse box. A wall switch is not enough.
- Critical:Test your non-contact voltage tester on a known live outlet first, then confirm every wire in the box is dead.
- Critical:Tape the breaker in the OFF position and leave a note so no one switches it back on.
- Critical:Work with dry hands, on a dry floor, and never touch an outlet that is wet.
- If you see scorch marks or smell burning, do not open the outlet. Switch off the circuit and call an electrician.
- Local codes in many areas require a licensed electrician to replace outlets or repair wiring. Check before you do more than inspect.

Step-by-step fix

Confirm the outlet is really dead
Plug in a lamp or phone charger you know works, or a plug-in outlet tester. Test both halves of a duplex outlet. If the device works in another outlet but not this one, the outlet has no power. Note whether other outlets nearby are dead too.

Try nearby wall switches
Flip every wall switch in the room, especially ones that do not seem to control a ceiling light. If the outlet comes on, it is a switched outlet and nothing is wrong. If your sockets have their own built-in switches, make sure they are on.

Check the breaker or fuse box
Look for a breaker in the middle or OFF position. Push it fully OFF, then firmly ON. For a fuse box, check for a blown fuse and replace it only with the exact same rating. If the breaker trips again straight away, stop and read the breaker guide or call an electrician.

Reset GFCIs and RCDs
Find every GFCI outlet in bathrooms, kitchen, garage, basement and outdoors, and press RESET firmly. In a consumer unit, check whether an RCD or RCCB switch has dropped down and push it back up. One tripped device can kill outlets in several rooms.
Tip: Once power is back, put a small label on the outlet saying which breaker or GFCI controls it.

Look for warning signs from the outside
Check the outlet face and cover for scorch marks, melted plastic, cracks or a burning smell. Touch the cover plate with the back of your hand: it should feel room temperature. Any heat damage means you should leave the circuit off and call an electrician rather than opening it yourself.
Warning: Brown or black marks around the slots mean arcing has occurred. Do not use the outlet.

Switch off and verify dead
If there is no heat damage and you want to inspect the connections, switch off the breaker for that circuit, tape it and leave a note. Test your non-contact tester on a working outlet, then hold it near both slots of the dead outlet and, after removing the cover plate, near every wire.
Warning: If the tester beeps on any wire after the breaker is off, the box may be fed by another circuit. Stop and call an electrician.

Inspect the connections
Remove the two mounting screws and gently pull the outlet forward. Look for wires that have come off a terminal, loose screws, push-in connections that pull out easily, or darkened, brittle insulation. In the US, hot is usually black on the brass screw and neutral white on the silver screw; in IEC countries live is brown and neutral blue. Earth or ground is green, green-yellow or bare copper.
Tip: Photograph the wiring before you touch anything so you can put it back exactly as it was.

Tighten or replace like-for-like
If a wire has simply loosened from a screw terminal and the copper and insulation look clean, re-wrap it clockwise around the screw and tighten firmly. Move push-in wires to the screw terminals. If the outlet is cracked or worn, replace it with the same type and rating, wired exactly as the photo shows. Do not reuse wire that is nicked, blackened or brittle.
Warning: If you find aluminum wiring, cloth-covered wiring, melted insulation or more wires than you understand, stop and call an electrician.

Restore power and test
Fold the wires neatly back, screw the outlet into the box and fit the cover plate. Remove the tape and switch the breaker on. Use your plug-in tester to confirm the outlet works and is wired correctly. If other outlets on the circuit were dead too, check them as well.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my outlet not working when the breaker is not tripped?
Check for a tripped GFCI or RCD elsewhere, a wall switch controlling the outlet, or a half-tripped breaker that looks on. If those are fine, a loose connection in this outlet or an earlier one on the circuit is the likely cause.
Why does only half of my outlet work?
Usually because that half is switched: the small metal tab between the terminals was removed so a wall switch controls one half. Try the switches in the room. If none control it, the half may have a loose connection or a worn contact.
Is a dead outlet dangerous?
A dead outlet on its own is not usually dangerous, but the cause might be. A loose connection that has stopped carrying power can arc and heat up. If you notice heat, smell or discoloration, leave the circuit off and call an electrician.
Can one bad outlet make other outlets stop working?
Yes. Outlets are usually wired in a chain, with power passing through each one to the next. A loose or failed connection in one outlet can cut power to all the outlets after it on that circuit.
Should I use push-in connections on a new outlet?
It is better to use the side screw terminals, or a back-wire clamp that tightens with a screw. Simple push-in (backstab) connections loosen more easily over time and are a common cause of dead or overheating outlets.
