Flicker in one light is usually a bulb, dimmer or socket issue you can fix safely. Flicker across the whole house, or lights dimming when big appliances start, can mean a loose neutral or supply fault: call an electrician or your utility.
A flickering light is one of the most common electrical complaints. In most cases it is harmless and simple: a bulb that isn’t screwed in fully, an LED that doesn’t get along with an old dimmer, or a worn socket. These are safe fixes you can do in minutes.
The important question is how far the flicker spreads. If it is one fixture, the cause is almost always in that fixture, its bulb or its switch. If lights all over the house flicker, or brighten and dim when the washing machine, AC or microwave starts, the problem may be in your main supply or panel. A loose neutral connection, for example, can send uneven voltage through the house, damage appliances and cause fires. That is not a DIY job.
Whether your supply is 120 V (North America) or 230 V (India, the UK and the EU), it is dangerous. Changing a bulb is safe with the light switched off and cool. Anything involving the fixture’s wiring needs the circuit off at the breaker or fuse box and a tester check first.

Signs of the problem
- A single bulb or fixture flickers, while others are fine

Common causes
Loose or failing bulb
Most commonA bulb that isn’t fully tightened makes intermittent contact. Bulbs also fail gradually: fluorescent tubes and CFLs flicker near end of life, and cheap LEDs can have failing internal drivers. Tightening or replacing the bulb solves a large share of flicker problems.
Dimmer and LED incompatibility
Most commonMany older dimmers were designed for incandescent bulbs and don’t work well with LEDs, causing flicker, buzzing or a minimum level that is too bright. Non-dimmable LEDs on a dimmer will flicker too. The fix is dimmable bulbs and a dimmer rated for LED loads.
Worn socket, switch or fixture connection
SometimesThe contact tab at the bottom of a bulb socket can flatten over time. Loose connections in the switch or fixture cause flicker when the switch or lamp is bumped. These are fixable, but only with the circuit off.
Heavy appliances on the same circuit
SometimesA brief dip in brightness when a motor starts (AC, fridge, pump, washing machine) can be normal, especially in older homes. Sustained or severe dimming suggests an overloaded circuit or undersized wiring.
Loose neutral or supply problem
Less commonIf lights all over the house flicker, or some brighten while others dim, the cause may be a loose neutral in the panel or meter, or a problem on the utility supply. This can cause overvoltage that damages electronics and creates fire risk. It needs an electrician or your utility urgently.
Safety first: before you start
- Critical:Turn off the light and let the bulb cool before touching it. Halogen and incandescent bulbs get very hot.
- Critical:Before touching any fixture wiring or socket, switch off the circuit at the breaker or fuse box, not just at the wall switch.
- Critical:Test your non-contact voltage tester on a known live outlet, then confirm the fixture wires are dead before touching them.
- Critical:Tape the breaker OFF and leave a note so no one turns it on while you work. Keep hands and the floor dry.
- Use a stable ladder or step stool for ceiling fixtures, with someone nearby.
- If lights all over the house flicker or some get brighter, don’t investigate the panel. Unplug sensitive electronics and call an electrician or your utility.

Step-by-step fix

Work out how widespread it is
Note whether the flicker affects one bulb, one fixture, one room or the whole house, and whether it happens when a particular appliance starts. One fixture points to the bulb, socket or switch. The whole house points to the supply or panel.
Warning: If lights in different rooms flicker together, or some brighten while others dim, stop here. Switch off sensitive electronics and call an electrician or your electricity supplier promptly. A loose neutral is a serious hazard.

Tighten the bulb
Switch the light off, let the bulb cool, and gently turn it clockwise until snug (or reseat a bayonet or pin-base bulb). Don’t overtighten. Turn the light back on and check.

Swap in a known good bulb
Replace the bulb with one you know works, of the correct base type and wattage for the fixture. If the flicker stops, the old bulb was failing. Fluorescent tubes that flicker may need a new tube or starter, and persistent flicker in tube fittings can mean a failing ballast or driver.

Check dimmer and bulb compatibility
If the light is on a dimmer, check the bulb packaging says dimmable. Many older dimmers need a minimum load and don’t work well with LEDs. Turn the dimmer up to full: if the flicker stops, the combination is the problem. Replace with dimmable LEDs and, if needed, a dimmer rated for LEDs.
Tip: Stick with one brand and model of LED bulb on the same dimmer. Mixing types often causes flicker.

Wiggle-test the switch and lamp
With the light on, gently touch the switch toggle or move the lamp and its cord. If the light flickers when you do this, there is a loose connection in the switch, the lamp cord or the plug. Unplug a flickering lamp and inspect its cord. For wall switches, see the switch replacement guide.

Inspect the socket with the power off
Switch off the breaker, tape it and leave a note. Test your tester on a live outlet, then confirm the fixture is dead. Remove the bulb and look into the socket. If the brass tab at the bottom is flattened, gently lift it about 3 mm (1/8 inch) with a wooden stick or insulated screwdriver. Look for scorch marks or corrosion.
Warning: If the socket is scorched, melted or corroded, don’t use it. Replace the fixture or call an electrician.

Check what happens when appliances start
Note if the lights dim when the AC, fridge compressor, pump or washing machine starts. A brief, small dip can be normal. Dimming that is strong, lasts more than a second or two, or is getting worse suggests the circuit is overloaded or a connection is loose. An electrician can measure voltage drop and check connections safely.

If the bulb, dimmer and socket are all fine and the flicker continues, the problem is in the wiring, the panel or the supply. Don’t open the panel. Book an electrician, and if the whole house is affected, contact your utility too, since the fault may be on their side of the meter.

Frequently asked questions
Are flickering lights dangerous?
Flicker in a single bulb usually isn’t, and is fixed by tightening or replacing the bulb. Flicker across the whole house can signal a loose neutral or supply fault, which can damage appliances and cause fires. Treat whole-house flicker as urgent.
Why do my LED lights flicker?
The most common reasons are a dimmer not designed for LEDs, non-dimmable bulbs on a dimmer, a low-quality LED driver, or mixing different bulb types on one circuit. Try dimmable bulbs from one brand and an LED-rated dimmer.
Why do my lights dim when the AC turns on?
Large motors draw a surge of current when they start, which briefly lowers voltage. A small, momentary dip can be normal. A big or long dip suggests an overloaded circuit, a loose connection or undersized wiring, and an electrician should check it.
What is a loose neutral?
The neutral is the return path for current. If its connection in the panel or meter loosens, voltage in the house becomes unbalanced: some circuits get too little and others too much. Signs are lights brightening and dimming in different rooms and appliances failing. It needs a professional immediately.
Can a bad light switch cause flickering?
Yes. Worn contacts or a loose wire in the switch cause flicker, especially when the switch is touched. Replacing the switch with the power off and verified usually solves it.
