Swapping a like-for-like ceiling or wall light is a common DIY job if you switch off the breaker, verify dead with a tester and use a steady ladder. Heavy fixtures, fans, aluminum or cloth wiring and any damaged wire are jobs for an electrician.
Replacing an old ceiling or wall light is one of the most satisfying upgrades you can do, and one of the most common DIY electrical jobs. The wiring is usually simple: a live (hot) wire, a neutral and a ground or earth. The harder parts are working overhead on a ladder and making sure the new fixture is well supported.
Before you buy anything, look at what you are working with. Check the weight of the new fixture against what the ceiling box can hold. Ceiling fans need a box specifically rated for fans, because their movement loosens ordinary boxes. If you find aluminum wiring (dull silver), old cloth-covered wiring, or wires with brittle, cracked insulation, stop. Those need an electrician’s assessment.
Household voltage is 120 V in North America and 230 V in India, the UK and the EU, and both can kill. The wall switch does not guarantee the fixture is dead, so you will switch off the circuit at the breaker or fuse box and test before touching anything. In some countries local codes require a licensed electrician for fixture replacement, so check first.

Safety first: before you start

Step-by-step fix

Check the fixture and box before you start
Read the new fixture’s weight and instructions. Look at the ceiling box: plastic boxes and many older boxes are only meant for light fixtures up to a modest weight, so heavy chandeliers need a box and support rated for them. Ceiling fans must go on a box marked for fan support.
Tip: If you are not sure what the box is rated for, an electrician can check and upgrade it quickly.

Switch off and verify dead
Turn the light on, then switch off breakers until it goes out. Tape the breaker OFF and leave a note. Test your non-contact tester on a working outlet, then remove the old fixture’s shade and cover and hold the tester near every wire. It must stay silent.
Warning: Some ceiling boxes carry wires from more than one circuit. If anything still reads live, stop and find the right breaker or call an electrician.

Support the old fixture and disconnect it
Have a helper hold the fixture or hang it from a wire hook while you work. Take clear photos of the connections. Unscrew the wire nuts or connectors and separate the wires, labeling the house wires with tape: hot (US black or red; IEC brown), neutral (US white; IEC blue) and ground (bare copper, green or green-yellow).

Inspect the house wiring
Look at the wires coming from the ceiling. The copper should be clean and the insulation flexible. If the wire is dull silver (aluminum), cloth-covered, brittle, cracked or scorched, don’t continue. Aluminum needs special connectors and techniques, and damaged wire needs repair by an electrician.
Warning: Don’t reuse wire that is burnt, brittle or nicked. If there isn’t enough good wire left to trim back, call an electrician.

Install the mounting bracket
Remove the old bracket if the new fixture came with its own. Screw the new bracket to the box using the screws provided, making sure it is tight and level. If the box itself moves, stop and have it secured before hanging anything.

Connect the ground
Connect the fixture’s ground wire (green, green-yellow or bare) to the house ground wire and, if the box is metal, to the bracket’s green ground screw. A pigtail (short piece of ground wire) joined with a wire nut is the usual way to connect everything together.

Connect neutral and hot
Join the fixture’s neutral (often white, or the wire with ribbed or marked insulation on some fixtures; blue in IEC countries) to the house neutral. Join the fixture’s hot (black, or brown) to the house hot. Hold the stripped ends side by side and twist on a wire nut clockwise until tight, or use lever connectors. Tug each wire to make sure it is held, and make sure no bare copper shows below the connector except the ground.
Tip: If the fixture wires are stranded and the house wires solid, let the stranded wire extend slightly past the solid one before twisting the wire nut on.

Tuck the wires and mount the fixture
Fold the wires neatly into the box without pinching them between the fixture and the ceiling. Attach the fixture to the bracket with the supplied screws or nuts while your helper holds its weight. Fit bulbs no higher than the rated wattage, then the shade or cover.

Restore power and test
Remove the tape, switch the breaker on and test the light with the wall switch. Watch for flicker, buzzing or smell. If anything seems wrong, switch off at the breaker again and recheck the connections.

Can I replace a light fixture myself?

What if there is no ground wire in the ceiling box?

Which wire is hot on a light fixture?
In the US, the house hot is usually black (sometimes red) and neutral is white. Can I hang a ceiling fan where a light was?
