Yes. Most thermostats run on low voltage and are safe to troubleshoot, as long as you switch off power to the heating and cooling system at the breaker before touching wires. Line-voltage (mains) thermostats for electric baseboard heaters are different and should be handled by an electrician.
The thermostat is the brain of a heating and cooling system. When it stops working, the furnace, boiler, heat pump or air conditioner may seem broken when the real problem is a dead battery, a wrong setting or a loose wire behind the faceplate.
Most wall thermostats in homes with central heating and cooling use low-voltage (typically 24-volt) wiring supplied by the HVAC system, and are safe to work on with the system powered down. Smart thermostats often need a C (common) wire to supply constant power, and a missing C-wire is a frequent reason a new smart thermostat keeps going blank or rebooting.
Not all thermostats are low voltage. Thermostats that control electric baseboard or wall heaters are often line-voltage, carrying full mains current (120 V, 240 V or 230 V depending on your country). These are identifiable by thick wires, often with wire nuts, and a warning label. Don’t open or rewire them yourself.

Common causes
Dead or weak batteries
Most commonMany thermostats run on AA or AAA batteries, and even some wired models use batteries as a backup. Weak batteries cause a dim or blank screen, lost settings, or failure to switch on the system.
Wrong mode, schedule or setting
Most commonThe mode may be Off, Cool instead of Heat, or a schedule, hold or vacation mode may be overriding manual changes. Some thermostats also have a built-in delay of several minutes to protect the compressor.
Poor placement or dirt
SometimesA thermostat in direct sunlight, near a lamp, oven, draft or exterior door reads the wrong temperature. Dust inside older mechanical models and a crooked mercury-type unit also give false readings.
Loose wires or no power
SometimesA wire that has worked loose from its terminal, a tripped breaker, or a blown fuse on the furnace control board cuts power or signals. Smart thermostats without a C-wire may lose power intermittently.

Less commonThermostats do wear out. If everything else checks out, the unit itself may be faulty and need replacing.
Safety first: before you start

- Old mechanical thermostats may contain a glass mercury switch. Don’t break it or throw it in household trash: take it to a hazardous waste or recycling point.
- Don’t short wires together to test the system unless a technician guides you. It can blow the control board fuse.

Step-by-step fix

Replace the batteries
Pull the thermostat faceplate gently off its wall base, or open the battery door, and put in fresh batteries of the correct type. Many battery thermostats show a low-battery warning weeks before they fail, but some simply go blank.
Tip: Use good-quality alkaline batteries. Some thermostats don’t work well with rechargeables because of their lower voltage.

Check mode, temperature and schedule
Set the mode to Heat or Cool as needed, and set the temperature at least 2 to 3 degrees beyond the current room temperature. Cancel any hold, vacation or away mode. Set the fan to Auto. Then wait 5 to 10 minutes, as many thermostats and systems have a start delay.

Check power to the system
If the thermostat is hardwired and the display is blank, check the breaker for the furnace or air handler and its service switch. If the system has no power, the thermostat usually has none either.

Check placement and level
Make sure the thermostat isn’t in direct sun, near a heat source, above a supply vent, or in a draft. Older mechanical thermostats must be level to read accurately, so check with a small level. If placement is poor, consider relocating it, which usually means running new wire (a job for a pro).

Clean the inside
With the cover off, gently blow out dust with compressed air or a soft brush. On mechanical dial thermostats, dust on the contacts and bimetal coil can stop them switching properly.

Turn off power and check the wiring
Switch off the HVAC system at the breaker. Remove the faceplate and look at the wires on the base. Each should be firmly held under its terminal screw or in its push-in slot. Photograph the wiring, then tighten any loose screws gently. Don’t swap wires between terminals.
Warning: Only do this for low-voltage thermostats with thin, bell-wire style conductors. If you see thick wires or wire nuts, stop.

Check for a C-wire on smart thermostats
If a smart thermostat keeps rebooting or losing Wi-Fi, look for a wire connected to the C terminal. Often there’s an unused wire tucked behind the wall that can be connected at both ends. If there isn’t one, the manufacturer may offer a power adapter kit, or an HVAC technician can run a new wire.

Restore power and test
Refit the faceplate, turn the breaker back on, and test heat and cool. You should hear a click at the thermostat, then the system start within a few minutes.
