Checking the thermostat, filter, power switch, breaker and condensate line is safe for homeowners. Gas valves, burners, igniters, heat exchangers and wiring are for a licensed technician, and any gas smell means leave the home and call for help.
When the house is getting cold and the furnace won’t start, the fix is often simpler than you’d think. Dead thermostat batteries, a switch that someone turned off, a tripped breaker, a clogged filter or a panel door that isn’t closed properly can all stop a perfectly good furnace from running.
Modern furnaces have several safety switches that shut the system down when something is wrong: a door switch that cuts power when the blower door is off, limit switches that trip if the furnace overheats (often due to a dirty filter), and on high-efficiency units, a pressure or float switch that stops the furnace if the condensate drain is blocked. Many also flash a diagnostic code on a small light visible through a window in the door.
This guide covers the checks a homeowner can safely do. It does not cover gas valves, burners, igniters, flame sensors behind sealed panels or the heat exchanger. Those parts involve gas and combustion, and mistakes can cause fires, explosions or carbon monoxide poisoning. If you smell gas at any point, stop and leave the home.

Signs of the problem

Common causes
Thermostat problem
Most commonDead batteries, the mode set to Cool or Off, a set temperature below room temperature, or a schedule override will stop the thermostat calling for heat. This is the most common and easiest fix.
Power switched off or breaker tripped
Most commonMost furnaces have a service switch that looks like a light switch on or near the unit, and it’s easy to turn off by mistake. The furnace circuit breaker may also have tripped.
Clogged air filter
Most commonA dirty filter restricts airflow so the furnace overheats. The high-limit switch then shuts off the burners to protect it, so the furnace may run briefly and then stop, or blow cool air.
Blower door not closed
SometimesA safety switch cuts power when the lower blower access panel is removed or not seated properly. After changing the filter, a panel that’s slightly out of place will keep the furnace off.
Blocked condensate drain (high-efficiency furnaces)
SometimesCondensing furnaces produce water that drains through a plastic line and trap. If the line, trap or condensate pump clogs, a safety switch stops the furnace from firing.
Ignition, flame sensor or gas supply fault
SometimesA failed igniter, dirty flame sensor, faulty gas valve, or gas supply problem will prevent the burners lighting or keep them lit. These all involve gas and combustion parts and need a licensed technician.
Safety first: before you start
- Critical:If you smell gas (a rotten egg or sulphur smell), don’t touch any switches, thermostats or phones indoors. Leave the home immediately and call your gas utility or emergency services from outside.
- Critical:Never adjust, remove or tamper with the gas valve, burners, igniter, flue pipe or heat exchanger. These are for licensed technicians only.
- Critical:Make sure you have working carbon monoxide alarms near sleeping areas. If a CO alarm sounds, get everyone outside and call emergency services.
- Turn off the furnace power switch before removing the blower door or changing the filter.
- Let the furnace cool before touching any panels. Parts near the burners get very hot.
- Don’t repeatedly reset a furnace that keeps shutting down. Repeated lockouts point to a fault that needs a technician.

Step-by-step fix

Check the thermostat
Set the mode to Heat and the temperature at least 2 to 3 degrees above the room temperature. If the display is blank or dim, replace the batteries. Check that no schedule, vacation or hold setting is overriding you. Wait a few minutes: many furnaces run a short start-up sequence before heat comes out.

Check the furnace power switch
Look for a switch on or near the furnace, often mounted on a wall or ceiling box and looking like an ordinary light switch. Make sure it’s on. On some homes there’s a second switch at the top of the basement stairs.

Check the breaker
At the main electrical panel, find the breaker labelled furnace, heating or HVAC. If it has tripped (sitting in the middle or off position), push it fully off, then back on once.
Warning: If it trips again, leave it off and call an electrician or HVAC technician.

Replace a dirty filter
Turn the furnace power switch off. Slide out the filter from the filter slot or return grille. If it’s grey and matted, replace it with one of the same size, with the airflow arrow pointing toward the furnace. Turn the power back on.
Tip: A furnace that shuts off after a few minutes of running is often overheating because of a blocked filter.

Make sure the blower door is seated
The lower panel on the front of the furnace presses a small safety switch when it’s closed. Check it’s fully in place and latched. If the furnace has a small window, look at the status light to see whether it has power.

Read the diagnostic light
Many furnaces blink a status LED in a pattern. Count the blinks and match them to the chart printed on the inside of the furnace door or in the manual. Take a photo or video to share with a technician. Codes for pressure switches or flame problems usually mean a professional visit.

Check the condensate drain on high-efficiency units
If your furnace has white plastic vent pipes, it’s a condensing furnace. Look for water on the floor, a full condensate pump reservoir, or a clogged clear drain line. With power off, empty the pump reservoir and clear the line’s outdoor or floor-drain end with a wet/dry vacuum. Restore power and see if it restarts.

Reset once, then call for help
After fixing any of the above, turn the power switch off for 30 seconds, then on again. The furnace should go through its start-up: inducer fan, ignition, burners, then blower. If it still won’t heat, or it locks out again, call a licensed HVAC technician.
Warning: Don’t keep cycling power over and over. Repeated failed ignition attempts can let gas build up.

- Change or clean the filter regularly, especially during heavy use.
- Have the furnace serviced by a licensed technician each year before winter.
- Test carbon monoxide alarms monthly and replace them at the end of their rated life.
- Keep the area around the furnace clear of storage, especially flammables.
- Keep outdoor intake and exhaust vents clear of snow, leaves and nests.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my furnace not turning on when the thermostat is working?
Check the furnace power switch, the breaker, and that the blower door is fully closed. A clogged filter or blocked condensate drain can also stop it. If those are fine, look at the diagnostic light and call a technician with the code.
Is there a reset button on a furnace?
Some furnaces have one, but most are reset by switching the power off for 30 seconds and back on. Reset once. If the furnace keeps locking out, there’s an underlying fault that repeated resets won’t fix.
Can I relight my furnace pilot light myself?
Most modern furnaces don’t have a standing pilot. If yours does, follow the exact instructions on the furnace label, and only if there’s no smell of gas. If you’re unsure, or it won’t stay lit, call a technician.
What should I do if I smell gas near the furnace?
Don’t touch switches, the thermostat or electrical devices. Leave the home with everyone, leave the door open behind you if you can, and call your gas utility or emergency services from outside. Don’t go back in until they say it’s safe.
Why does my furnace blow cold air?
The fan may be set to On instead of Auto, the furnace may be overheating from a dirty filter, or the burners may not be lighting. Set the fan to Auto and replace the filter. If it still blows cold, call a technician.
