Buttons, batteries and chime wiring on low-voltage doorbells are safe to work on. The doorbell transformer is usually connected to mains power, so switch off the breaker before touching it, and call an electrician if its mains wiring needs work.

Doorbells come in three main kinds, and each fails in its own way. A wired doorbell has a button outside, a chime inside and a small transformer that turns mains voltage into low voltage (often around 10 to 24 V in North America; in many other countries wired bells are mains-powered or use a similar transformer). A wireless doorbell uses a battery-powered button that sends a radio signal to a plug-in or battery chime. A video doorbell runs on its own battery or on the existing doorbell wiring.

The low-voltage parts of a wired doorbell (button and chime wiring) carry little shock risk, and batteries are completely safe to change. The exception is the transformer. It is usually wired into a household circuit near the panel, a junction box, the furnace or the chime itself, so its input side carries full mains voltage: 120 V in North America or 230 V in India, the UK and the EU. Switch off the breaker before touching it, and leave its mains wiring to an electrician.

Most doorbell faults are simple: a dead battery, a stuck or corroded button, a loose wire at the chime or a failed transformer. This guide takes you through them in order from easiest to hardest.

Dead or weak batteries

Wireless buttons and chimes, and battery-powered video doorbells, stop working or lose range when their batteries run low. Cold weather drains batteries faster. This is the most common cause for wireless systems.

Faulty or corroded button

Most common

Outdoor buttons are exposed to rain, dust and insects. Contacts corrode or the button sticks. A stuck button can make the chime buzz constantly. Buttons are inexpensive and easy to replace on low-voltage systems.

Loose wire at the button or chime

Most common

The thin low-voltage wires can loosen from their screws. Common terminals on a chime are labeled FRONT, REAR and TRANS (for transformer). A loose connection stops the bell completely.

Failed transformer

Sometimes

Transformers can burn out, especially if a button was stuck and the chime powered continuously. If there is no low voltage at the chime, the transformer may be the problem. Its mains side must be dealt with safely or by an electrician.

Wireless pairing or interference

Sometimes

Wireless buttons can lose pairing with the chime after battery changes or power cuts. Thick walls, metal doors and other wireless devices can also reduce range.

Insufficient power for a video doorbell

Sometimes

Video doorbells often need more power than an old transformer provides. Symptoms include rebooting, going offline or a chime that doesn’t ring. The manufacturer’s app usually shows power status.

Safety first: before you start

  • Critical:Treat the doorbell transformer as mains-powered. Switch off its circuit at the breaker or fuse box before touching it or its wires.
  • Critical:Test your non-contact voltage tester on a known live outlet first, then confirm the transformer’s mains wires are dead.
  • Critical:Tape the breaker OFF and leave a note so no one switches it on while you work.
  • Critical:Keep hands and the floor dry, especially when working at an outdoor button in wet weather.
  • Never open a transformer or a mains-powered chime. Replacement of the mains connection may require a licensed electrician where you live.

Step-by-step fix

    Identify your doorbell type

    Look at the button and the chime. If there are no wires and the button has a battery compartment, it is wireless. If the chime is plugged into an outlet, it is wireless too. If wires come out of the wall behind the button and the chime, it is wired. For video doorbells, check whether it runs on battery or on the doorbell wiring.

    Replace batteries and re-pair wireless units

    Put fresh batteries in the button and, if it uses them, the chime. Check the polarity markings. If it still doesn’t work, follow the manual to re-pair the button to the chime, which usually means pressing a button on the chime and then the doorbell button within a few seconds.

    Tip: Move the chime closer to the door to test whether range or interference is the issue.

    Check a video doorbell’s power

    Open the doorbell’s app and look for battery level or power warnings. Charge battery models fully. For wired video doorbells, low power often means the transformer’s output is too low for the device. The manufacturer lists the voltage and rating it needs, and an electrician can fit a suitable transformer.

    Inspect and test the button

    On a wired doorbell, unscrew the button from the wall and gently pull it out. The wires are low voltage, but avoid letting them touch each other or anything metal. Look for loose or corroded wires. Tighten the screws and clean corrosion with fine sandpaper. To test, briefly touch both wires together (or bridge the two terminals with an insulated screwdriver). If the chime rings, the button is faulty and should be replaced.

    Warning: Only do this on a low-voltage doorbell system. If your doorbell button is mains-powered (common in some countries), don’t touch the wires. Switch off the breaker and call an electrician.

    Check the chime connections

    Remove the chime cover. Look at the terminals, usually marked FRONT, REAR and TRANS. Tighten any loose screws and check wires aren’t broken. Clean dust from the chime plungers, which can stick. Don’t oil them, which attracts dust.

    Switch off before touching the transformer

    The transformer is often near the breaker panel, in a basement or attic, beside the furnace, or behind the chime. Switch off the circuit feeding it at the breaker or fuse box, tape it and leave a note. Test your non-contact tester on a live outlet, then confirm the transformer’s mains wires are dead.

    Warning: Never touch the mains side of the transformer while power is on. The high-voltage wires are usually inside a junction box or connected with wire nuts.

    Check the transformer connections

    With the power still off, check the low-voltage screw terminals for loose or corroded wires and tighten them. Don't test the transformer with the power on yourself: it's connected to mains wiring. If the button and chime check out but the doorbell still doesn't work, the transformer has probably failed, and an electrician can test and replace it safely.

    Tip: A transformer that hums loudly or is very hot may be failing, often because a stuck button kept the chime powered.

    Replace the transformer or call a pro

    Replacing a transformer involves disconnecting and reconnecting mains wires. If you are experienced, switch off and verify dead, photograph the wiring and replace like-for-like with the same voltage rating. If you are unsure, or local rules require it, have an electrician do it.

Why is my wired doorbell not working?

Common causes are a faulty or corroded button, a loose wire at the chime, a stuck chime plunger or a failed transformer. Test the button by bridging its wires. If that doesn’t ring the chime, check the chime and transformer.

Can a doorbell give you a shock?

The low-voltage wiring of a typical wired doorbell has little shock risk. The transformer’s input side, however, is connected to mains power and can shock. In some countries doorbells run directly on mains power, so treat all wiring with care.

Where is my doorbell transformer?

A stuck button keeps power going to the chime, causing a buzz or hum. The chime plunger may also be stuck with dirt. Replace the button and clean the chime.
