A misaligned or dirty sensor, a small object in the path, or an adjustment issue can make the door refuse to close.

Many of these problems take minutes to fix: cleaning and realigning the sensors, clearing the path, replacing remote batteries, or turning off the lock setting on the wall control. This guide walks through those checks.

What you must not touch are the springs and cables. Torsion springs above the door and extension springs along the tracks store enough energy to lift a heavy door, and releasing that energy unexpectedly can cause severe injuries. Safety first: before you start

  • Critical:Never adjust, loosen, remove or repair torsion springs, extension springs, lift cables or bottom brackets. They are under extreme tension and can cause severe injury.
  • Critical:Keep hands, fingers and feet away from the door, tracks, rollers and hinges while the door is moving. Keep children and pets clear.

Step-by-step fix

    Clear the doorway

    Look along the full width of the door opening and both tracks for anything in the way: boxes, bins, tools, leaves or snow. Remove anything near the sensors at the bottom of each track, including cobwebs.

    Check the sensor lights

    Each safety sensor usually has a small LED. On many openers, one light is steady to show power and the other is steady when the beam is aligned. If one is off or blinking, the sensors are misaligned, dirty, or have a wiring problem. Check your opener manual for what the lights mean.

    Clean and align the sensors

    Wipe both sensor lenses with a soft, dry cloth. Check that both face each other squarely at the same height. Loosen the wing nut or bracket screw slightly, point the sensor at the other one until its light goes steady, then tighten it. A string stretched between them or a small level helps line them up.

    Tip: Bright sunlight shining directly into a sensor can blind it at certain times of day. A small shade or turning the sensor to the other side can help.

    Check sensor wires

    Follow the thin wires from each sensor up to the opener. Look for staples pinching the wire, cuts, or loose connections at the sensor. Loose connections at the sensor can often be pushed back in. Damaged wiring should be replaced.

    Check the remote and lock setting

    Try the wall button. If the wall button works but the remote doesn’t, replace the remote’s battery. If neither works, check whether the lock or vacation button on the wall control is on (often a lit indicator or padlock symbol) and turn it off. Also check the opener is plugged in and the circuit has power.

    Test the door balance safely

    With the door fully closed, unplug the opener and pull the emergency release cord. Lift the door by hand halfway. A balanced door stays roughly in place. If it drops quickly, is very heavy, or you see a gap in a torsion spring, stop. The spring is broken or out of adjustment and needs a professional.

    Warning: Only pull the release with the door closed. A door with a broken spring can fall with great force if released while open.

    Adjust limit or force settings per the manual

    If the sensors are fine but the door reverses when it touches the floor, or stops short, the close limit may need adjusting. Follow the opener manual exactly: many use buttons on the opener or small adjustment screws. Make small changes, then test. After any adjustment, test the safety reversal by placing a flat piece of wood (about 4 cm or 1.5 in thick) under the door: it must reverse on contact.

    Warning: Don’t increase force to push past a problem. If the door needs more force to close, something mechanical is wrong.

    Lubricate moving parts

    With the door closed and opener unplugged, apply a garage door lubricant to hinges and roller bearings if your manufacturer recommends it. Don’t grease the tracks themselves, and don’t spray near springs or cables if you’d have to reach into them.
