An ice maker that suddenly stops producing ice is one of the most common fridge complaints, and most of the time nothing is actually broken. The ice maker may have been switched off by accident, its shut-off arm may be stuck in the up position, or the water that feeds it may be blocked by a frozen tube, a clogged filter or a closed valve.
An automatic ice maker needs three things to work: power, a steady supply of water, and a freezer that’s cold enough. If any one is missing, production stops or slows. This guide walks through each of them in order, starting with the quickest checks.
If you’ve just installed a new fridge or ice maker, be patient. Many take a day or more to produce the first batch, and the first few batches should be thrown away to flush the new line.

Signs of the problem

Ice maker switched off or arm raised
Most commonMost ice makers have an on/off switch, a setting on the control panel, or a wire shut-off arm. If the arm is raised or caught on ice, or the switch was bumped off, the ice maker thinks the bin is full and stops.
Frozen fill tube
Most commonThe small tube that carries water into the ice mold can freeze shut, especially if water pressure is low or the freezer is very cold. You may hear the valve buzz but no water reaches the tray.
Clogged water filter or low water pressure
Most commonAn old filter restricts the flow of water, leading to small cubes or none at all. Low household water pressure has the same effect. Slow dispenser flow is a clue.
Water supply valve closed or line kinked
SometimesThe supply valve under the sink or behind the fridge may be partly closed, or the line may be kinked after the fridge was moved. Without enough water, the ice maker can’t fill.
Freezer too warm
SometimesIce makers usually need the freezer to be around -18°C (0°F) or colder to cycle properly. If the freezer is warmer, ice forms slowly or not at all.
Failed water inlet valve or ice maker module
Less commonThe inlet valve at the back of the fridge opens to let water in. If it fails, no water reaches the ice maker. The ice maker module itself can also fail. Both are replaceable, but it’s an advanced repair.
Safety first: before you start
- Critical:Unplug the fridge before working on the fill tube, removing the ice maker, or reaching behind the fridge.
- Critical:Keep water away from electrical connections. Don’t pour water onto the ice maker module or wiring.
- Keep fingers away from the ice maker’s ejector arms and the auger in the ice bin while the fridge is powered. They can start moving without warning.
- Close the water supply valve before disconnecting or moving the water line.
- Get a helper to pull the fridge out, and don’t kink or stretch the water line.

Step-by-step fix

Check the switch and shut-off arm
Look for the ice maker’s on/off switch (often on the side of the ice maker) or an ice setting on the fridge’s control panel, and make sure it’s on. If there’s a wire shut-off arm, lower it to the down position. Clear away any ice cubes that are jamming it up.
Tip: Some fridges have an ice maker lock or a separate ice-off setting on the dispenser panel. Check your manual.

Check the freezer temperature

Test the water supply
If your fridge has a water dispenser, fill a glass. Slow flow or no water points to a supply or filter problem. Find the supply valve (often under the kitchen sink or behind the fridge) and make sure it’s fully open.

Replace or reseat the water filter
If the filter is past its replacement date, replace it with the correct model. If it’s new, remove and reinstall it firmly until it locks. Afterwards, run several glasses of water through the dispenser to flush air and loose carbon from the line.

Check the water line for kinks
Close the supply valve. With a helper, pull the fridge out and look at the line behind it. Straighten any kinks and check for splits or loose fittings. Open the valve again and look for drips before pushing the fridge back.
Warning: Don’t push the fridge back so hard that the line gets pinched against the wall.

Thaw a frozen fill tube
Unplug the fridge. Remove the ice bin and look where the fill tube enters the ice maker, usually at the back. If you see ice blocking it, thaw it gently by squeezing warm water from a turkey baster into the tube, catching the water with a towel. Or leave the freezer door open with the fridge unplugged until it melts.
Warning: Keep water away from the ice maker’s electrical connector. Don’t use a hair dryer close to the ice maker, and never use a knife or sharp object to chip ice.

Reset the ice maker
Many ice makers have a reset or test button, or a reset procedure in the manual. Plug the fridge back in and follow your model’s steps. Then wait: a working ice maker usually produces its first batch within several hours, and a full bin can take a day or more.

Consider the water inlet valve (advanced)
If water still won’t fill the tray even though the supply is on, the filter is fine and the tube is clear, the water inlet valve at the back of the fridge may have failed. Replacing it involves unplugging the fridge, shutting off the water and removing a rear panel. It’s an advanced DIY job; if you’re not confident, call a technician.
