The good news is that many cooling problems have simple causes: a thermostat bumped to a warmer setting, a door that isn’t sealing, dusty condenser coils, or food blocking the vents that carry cold air from the freezer to the fridge. These are safe to check and fix yourself.

Wrong temperature setting

Dirty condenser coils
Most commonThe condenser coils release heat from the fridge. When they’re covered in dust and pet hair, the fridge can’t shed heat, runs longer and cools poorly. They’re usually underneath behind a front grille, or on the back.
Leaking door seals
SometimesTorn, warped or dirty door gaskets let warm, humid air in. The fridge runs more, frost builds up, and the temperature creeps up, especially in hot, humid weather.
Evaporator fan failure or frost buildup
SometimesThe evaporator fan in the freezer pushes cold air around. If it stops, or if a defrost problem lets ice cover the evaporator coils, the fridge warms up while the freezer may stay cold for a while. A thick layer of frost on the freezer’s back panel is a telltale sign.
Compressor or sealed-system fault
Less commonIf both compartments are warm, the fan runs but the compressor is silent or clicks on and off, or the coils never get cold, the problem may be the compressor, start relay or a refrigerant leak. These need a licensed technician.
Safety first: before you start
- Critical:Unplug the fridge (or switch it off at its breaker) before cleaning coils, removing panels or touching the fan.

- Don’t lay a fridge on its side to move it unless you must, and if you do, stand it upright for several hours before plugging in (check your manual).

Step-by-step fix

Protect your food first
Put a thermometer in the fridge and check the reading. If the fridge has been above 4°C (40°F) for a long time, follow your local food-safety authority’s guidance. Many advise discarding perishable foods such as meat, fish, dairy, cooked leftovers and cut fruit that have been above that temperature for more than about two hours. Move good food to a cooler with ice packs or a working freezer while you troubleshoot.

Check the settings and power
Make sure the fridge is switched on, the light works, and the temperature control is at the recommended middle setting. Check that it isn’t in a demo, vacation or showroom mode (see your manual). After changing a setting, give it up to 24 hours to stabilize.

Clear the vents and rearrange food
Look for the air vents, usually at the back or top of the fridge compartment and in the freezer. Move any food that’s blocking them and leave space between items so air can circulate. Don’t pack the fridge so full that air can’t move.

Test the door seals
Close the door on a sheet of paper or a banknote at several points around the door, then pull it out. You should feel some resistance. If it slides out easily, the seal isn’t gripping there. Clean the gasket with warm soapy water, check for tears, and make sure nothing inside is stopping the door from closing.
Tip: A fridge tilted slightly back (front feet a little higher) helps the doors swing shut and seal on their own.

Clean the condenser coils
Unplug the fridge. Find the coils: on many models they’re behind the kick plate at the bottom front; on others they’re on the back. Remove the grille, then use a coil brush and vacuum to remove dust and hair. Clean gently so you don’t bend the fins or tubing.
Warning: Keep the fridge unplugged while cleaning. The condenser fan near the coils can start without warning.

Check the condenser fan (if your model has one)
Plug the fridge back in and listen near the bottom rear. On models with a condenser fan, it should spin when the compressor runs. If the compressor hums but the fan doesn’t move, unplug the fridge and check for debris blocking the blades.

Listen for the evaporator fan
Open the freezer door and press the door switch (the small button or lever the door pushes) to trick the fridge into thinking the door is closed. You should hear a fan running behind the freezer’s back panel. Silence, grinding or ticking noises suggest the fan is failing or blocked by ice.

Check for heavy frost on the freezer back panel
Thick, even frost covering the back wall of the freezer points to a defrost problem. As a temporary fix, move the food to coolers, unplug the fridge, prop the doors open, and let the ice melt completely with towels to catch water. This can take a day. If the fridge works for a while and then warms up again, the defrost heater, thermostat or timer has likely failed and needs a technician.
Warning: Don’t use sharp objects to chip ice off. Puncturing the evaporator releases refrigerant and ruins the fridge.

After fixing settings, seals or coils, let the fridge run for up to 24 hours before judging the result. Keep a thermometer inside and check it a few times. Put food back once it reads 4°C (40°F) or below.
