An oven that won’t heat, or that heats far too slowly, can bring dinner plans to a halt. Before you assume a major fault, check the simple things: many modern ovens won’t heat if the clock hasn’t been set, if a control lock or demo mode is on, or if the self-clean lock is still engaged.
The next steps depend on whether your oven is electric or gas. Electric ovens use a bake element (usually at the bottom) and a broil or grill element (at the top). A failed bake element is the most common hardware fault and is often visible. Electric ranges also draw a lot of power, and in some countries use a double breaker where one half can trip.
Gas ovens use an igniter to light the gas at the burner. A weak igniter is a very common cause of a gas oven not heating, but because it controls when gas flows, any work on the igniter, gas valve or burner should be done by a qualified technician. If you ever smell gas, leave the house and call from outside.

Settings, clock or lock mode
Most commonSome ovens won’t heat until the clock is set after a power cut. Control lock, child lock, Sabbath mode, demo or showroom mode, or a delayed-start timer can all stop the oven heating. The self-clean door lock may also stay engaged after a cycle.
Failed bake element (electric)
Most commonThe bake element can burn out after years of heating and cooling. Look for a break, blister, bulge or burned spot. On some ovens the element is hidden under a floor panel, so you can’t see it.
Tripped breaker or blown fuse
SometimesElectric ovens and ranges run on a dedicated, high-power circuit. In some countries this uses a double breaker, and if only half trips, the lights and controls may work while the elements don’t heat. Gas ovens also need power for the igniter.
Weak igniter (gas)
Most commonIn many gas ovens, the igniter must glow hot enough to open the gas valve. As it weakens, it glows but never gets hot enough, so the gas never flows. This is common, but it’s a gas-system repair for a technician.
Faulty temperature sensor
SometimesThe oven temperature sensor, a thin rod usually at the top back of the oven, tells the control how hot it is. If it fails, the oven may heat poorly, overheat or show an error code.
Control board or thermostat fault
Less commonIf the element and sensor are fine, the control board, relay or thermostat may not be sending power to the heating element. This needs professional diagnosis.
Safety first: before you start
- Critical:If you smell gas, turn nothing on or off, don’t use your phone indoors, leave the house and call your gas provider or emergency number from outside.
- Critical:Before removing an element or any panel on an electric oven, switch off the oven at the breaker (or its isolator switch). Turning off the knobs is not enough.
- Critical:Never work on a gas oven’s igniter, burner, valve or gas line. These are for a qualified gas technician only.
- Let the oven cool completely before touching elements, racks or the interior.
- Wear gloves when removing panels. Sheet-metal edges inside ovens are sharp.
- Don’t pull a range out from the wall alone. It’s heavy and may be anchored with an anti-tip bracket; gas ranges have a gas line that mustn’t be strained.

Step-by-step fix

Check the clock, settings and lock mode
Set the clock if it’s flashing. Make sure you’ve selected a bake mode and a temperature, not just a timer. Look for a lock symbol and turn off control lock or child lock as described in your manual. Check for demo, showroom or Sabbath mode, and cancel any delayed-start timer.
Tip: After a power cut, some ovens need the clock set before they’ll heat at all.

Test with an oven thermometer
Place an oven thermometer in the center and preheat to a moderate temperature. After the preheat signal, check the reading. An oven that heats slowly or far below the set temperature points to an element, igniter or sensor problem.

Check the breaker or fuse (electric)
At your breaker panel, find the oven or range breaker. If it’s a double breaker, one half may have tripped. Switch it fully off, then back on. If your home has a separate isolator switch near the oven, make sure it’s on.
Warning: If the breaker trips again, stop. A repeated trip means an electrical fault that needs a technician or electrician.

Check the gas supply (gas ovens)
Make sure the gas valve behind or beside the oven is open and that the stovetop burners light. If the burners work but the oven doesn’t, watch through the oven window after turning it on: a glowing igniter with no flame after a minute or two usually means a weak igniter. Turn the oven off and call a qualified technician.
Warning: Don’t attempt to replace a gas igniter, valve or burner yourself. Any gas smell means leave and call from outside.

Look at the bake element (electric)
With the oven off and cool, look at the bottom element. Signs of failure include a visible break, blisters, bubbles, or a burned or discolored spot. If your oven has a hidden element under a floor panel, check your manual; some are reachable by removing the panel, others from the back.

Replace the bake element (electric, advanced)
Switch off the oven at the breaker first. Remove the screws holding the element’s bracket to the back wall, gently pull the element forward a few centimetres to expose the wires, and note which wire goes where (take a photo). Disconnect the wires, fit the new element in the same way, push it back and screw it in. Restore power at the breaker and test.
Warning: Turning off the oven at the knob does not cut power to the element terminals. Always switch off at the breaker and confirm the oven display is off before touching wires.
Tip: Don’t let the wires fall back through the hole in the oven wall. Hold them with a clip or pliers while you swap the element.

Inspect the temperature sensor
Find the thin metal rod near the top back of the oven. Check that it isn’t touching the oven wall and isn’t bent or damaged. Testing it with a multimeter is possible for confident DIYers using the values in the model’s service information; otherwise, leave sensor testing to a technician.

Run a test bake
With power restored, preheat the oven with the thermometer inside. Check that it reaches the set temperature in a reasonable time and holds it. If it doesn’t, the problem may be the control board or thermostat, which needs a professional.

Why is my oven light on but not heating?
