A microwave that hums, lights up and spins its turntable but leaves food cold is a very common failure. The usual culprits are internal parts: the magnetron (which produces the microwaves), the high-voltage diode, the high-voltage capacitor, or a door interlock switch. Unlike many appliances, these are not safe for homeowners to repair.

The reason is serious. A microwave’s high-voltage circuit uses a capacitor that stores enough energy to kill, and it can hold that charge for a long time after the microwave is unplugged.     Plug a lamp or phone charger into the same outlet to confirm it works. If it doesn’t, check the breaker and any GFCI or RCD reset buttons nearby. Make sure the microwave’s plug is pushed fully in and not loose, and that it isn’t on an extension cord.

    With the microwave unplugged, look inside. Check the waveguide cover (a small panel, often on the side wall) for burn marks or holes, and the interior walls for chipped paint or rust spots. Clean any food splatter with a damp cloth. Don’t unscrew anything or remove panels.

    Place a microwave-safe cup of water inside and run it on high for about one minute. Carefully check the water. If it’s warm or hot, the microwave is heating and the problem may have been settings or the door. If it’s still cold, the microwave has an internal fault.
